Using a Serial Printer with Parallel Adapter

Parallel/Serial Data Converter

The PA-2 parallel printer adapter cannot drive a serial printer directly. The data signals are completely incompatible. However, it is not difficult to convert parallel data to a format that is suitable for a serial printer using an external data converter.

Be aware that the conversion devices are active devices. A simple cable converter will not work. Data signals must be reconfigured electronically.

All devices that perform this function are active and they require power. Some devices are "self-powered" meaning that they derive power from unused signal lines. Some of these devices work with the RFC-1/B and some do not. If the device has an option for an external power supply then we recommend using it.

When a parallel to serial data adapter is used, the serial output of the converter must be set to the same data rate and protocol as the printer. Additionally, the DTE/DCE configuration settings must be set correctly. Typically, the adapter will be DTE and the printer will be DCE. Consult the device manuals for settings.

Data converters are not as common as they once were but they are not difficult to find. A web search should turn up several options. See the links section for some options.
