Capturing Data from the Parallel Port

It is possible to capture the data stream from the parallel port on the RAK-1 and redirect it to a computer or retransmit the data over another serial link. The parallel port offers one-way communication only so uses are limited to data logging only.

Assuming that the RFC-1/RAK has been programmed to print readings at selected intervals, the data stream will consist of an ASCII data stream that contains the channel readings.

Be aware that the conversion devices are active devices. A simple cable converter will not work. Data signals must be reconfigured electronically.

Data converters are not as common as they once were but they are not difficult to find. A web search should turn up several options. See the links section for some options.

These converter devices typically output RS-232 serial data. This data stream can easily be captured by a computer or converted to another data protocol as needed.
